Carol Henry, Eileen Betton, Pat Meyers, Sheila Rouse and Jane Wheeler (not pictured) represented Penn’s Woods Painters on Saturday, March 21, 2009 during the non-profit charity fair at the Capital City Mall.

Not only did the group provide information to prospective members, but they helped to get the word out about decorative painting and the chapter’s many community service projects.

Many members of Penn’s Woods Painters are active in their community through the chapter and individually. In 2007 and again in 2009 individual members donated painted items to be auctioned as part of Cumberland Valley Habitat for Humanity’s annual celebration dinner.

Imagine walking to church in the rain, then once inside, sitting in a pew filled with rain water; the winds blowing rain in all around you.  The roof is in desperate need of repair, and there are no windows! If this sounds ridiculous, it might interest you to know that in a village church in Panguma, Sierra Leone, Africa, this is the situation for about 4 months of the year, during their rainy season. By some standards, Sierra Leone is considered to be the poorest country in the world. Some of the stories of this area were told in the Warner Brothers movie "Blood Diamonds.”

In February 2010, a mission trip to Panguma is being organized by Camp Hill United Methodist Church, Jane’s church. They are partnering with the United Methodist Conference in Sierra Leone.  Their goal is to raise $25,000 to cover the needed repairs to the Panguma United Methodist Church, and the associated primary school.Through Jane’s efforts, they are over $2,000 closer to their goal!

For the past two years Penn’s Woods Painters has combined community service and Ways & Means Committee by participating in the Mechanicsburg Art Center and the Carlisle Crafters Market during the holidays.Workshops were held throughout the year to create beautiful hand painted Christmas ornaments, matching gift boxes and pins. The chapter made money to support its other community service projects and fulfilled its mission of spreading the word about decorative painting.
